A Little About Me!My mother tells me that at the age of 5 I was making couture apparel. With brown paper grocery bags, blunt scissors and a stapler that I snuck off her desk, I made my first dress. You can imagine how flattering that was! Soon after, my mom gave me some yarn needles and fabric and I created a menagerie of stuffed animals. From there I quickly branched out to clothing and accessories for my dolls. The refinement of my skills came a few years later with the help from Linda; my big sister from the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Organization. Linda and I made numerous projects and she opened my eyes to the world of sewing and crafting – what a treat! When I was 15 my dad asked me what I wanted to do when I grow up. Dreamily I blurted out, “A night club singer!” The next thing I knew we were in the car driving across town. When I asked where we were going, my dad said, “You need your own sewing machine.” I truly never thought about being a night club singer again, as I was enthralled with my very own sewing machine that allowed me to create anything, anytime I wanted to! The most valuable lesson that my big sister, Linda, taught me was, “even the best seamstress needs to rip out a seam and sew it again” and that “the end result of doing it correctly would be worth it.” A perfect example of this is the black dress that I wore in my senior photo. I remember, picking out the pattern and the jacquard fabric. After cutting and sewing, I fit it on so that we could shape the darts, and make adjustments so that it would fit nicely. I also remember how I struggled putting in the zipper along the back. I’m positive that we ripped it out at least 4 times, and in the end, the dress was smashing!
With these experiences in my back pocket, and support from my husband, family and friends, I created Urs’s Purses & More, LLC! |

When I was 7 years old, my Grandmother taught me how to sew using her 1940’s model sewing machine. I still remember the printed green fabric that we used to make that little top, and matching shorts. The next few summers we sewed many more projects. Eventually my Grandma gave me permission to use any of the fabric that was in the dresser. I spent hours daydreaming about all of the awesome clothes that we could make!
In 2000, I earned my BS degree in Apparel Design and Manufacturing. Since then I gained experience as a Pattern Maker, Technical Artist and as a Merchandiser, while employed by a well known clothing manufacturer. Working in Product Development, I interacted with many departments within the company and saw the product from a conceptual sketch all the way to the final garment in the store. That was an amazing adventure.
